Typography workshop with Hyper Island students

IMG_8971 copy

I had the pleasure of holding a lecture + workshop about typography with the IAD students over at Hyper Island Stockholm earlier this week. We talked about the history of type and some basics when it comes to creating a typeface – what to think about, what tools to use and so on. The task they were given in the end was to create a typeface in 24 hours. I’ve included some of the creations in this post, but make sure to look at them all at http://hypertypography.tumblr.com/!

North Kingdom is very involved in the eduction over at Hyper Island. We love to share our knowledge and help the next generation of creatives. Our creative director Daniel Ilic helps Hyper Island to tailor each years educational programme and earlier this month our IA Alfredo Aponte held a lecture about interactive interfaces and how animation can be used to create a better experience. (the presentation can be seen a bit further down on this blog.) Robert Linström, our Senior Art Director and co-founder, did an inspirational talk about the work we do and how we do it. In January our technical director Daniel Isaksson will do a talk and hold a workshop about technology. Apart from lectures we are also mentoring the students. We meet up with them in smaller groups discussing the work they are doing and giving them feedback and how they should move on.

UX Talk // Enhancing Experiences with Animation

Last week I was invited by Henrik Wrangel from Doberman to give a lecture about interactive interfaces and how animation can be used to create a better experience for his Interaction Design class at Hyper Island. In return, I was happy to accept the invite and was eager to explore the idea further because I wanted to challenge the reasons why animation is even needed.

So, I spent a few days breaking down the topic and quickly landed on some fundamental elements about design, cognitive behavior, and natural human characteristics. Before I knew it, I found myself flipping through old notes from Donald Norman’s book, Emotional Design. In the end, everything began coming together as I knew I wanted to address the topic from the product’s personality perspective and how we as humans naturally behave.

As you can and may see… I had a lot of fun with the topic. I just wish their was an easier way to capture all my thoughts and discussion points outside the deck for you to follow because I use the visual slides as supporting content to what I was discussing, acting out, or improvising with the audience. So, I tried to add a “closed caption” aspect on some pages to help explain a few points. Furthermore, some pages have small titles at the top that point to hyperlinks if you wish to see the full video reference.

Setting up a Master’s Programme

During the autumn we have been involved in setting up a master’s programme in interaction design and crossmedia together with the Department of Informatics at Umeå University.

We see a great need for understanding and creating platforms and content in a rapidly changing media landscape. The technical evolution creates a sea of endless possibilites and drives the need for talent that understands the importance of strategic thinking.

The master programme brings together the two areas of Cross Media and Interaction Design in order to provide a solid theoretical and practical framework for creating and understanding the future content of the digital media landscape. In close collaboration with industry, the programme prepares for the rapidly changing work practice of creating digital media content, or for a future in Cross Media Interaction Design research.

Collaborative knowledge sharing

EDUCATION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF CREATIVES AT –

hi logo

Many of us in the “digital industry” often have a mixed educational background. Engineers gets to play with art school dropouts; business school graduates pair up with behavioral science alumni’s – all forming teams that shape the very outcome of what we do each and every day. Quite interesting if you think about it.

One knowledge provider is Hyper Island. Or, the “Digital Harvard” – educating talent for digital creative environments.

For the fourth year in a row we host a module called ‘Advanced Interface Design’ for the Interactive Art Director students at Hyper Island in Stockholm.

Quite a convoluted name for a course but what matters most is the ingredients; the module is a seven week long escapade and exploration in the craft of digital storytelling, design and technology.

Motion Capture in 3D Using Time of Flight Camera

optronic 3d camera interacitve

For 6 months we have had 2 student from Chalmers University of Technology to do their master thesis around real-time 3D motion capture using Time-of-flight camera

The technology is used in our interactive installation for Skellefteå Airport.

The students have written a paper about their findings so far that has been accepted at ICIET 2010 and that can be downloaded here: 3D motion capture using TOF

“This article describes inferences derived from practical and theoretical explorations regarding three-dimensional motion capture to develop numerous software applications using Time-of-Flight (TOF) range sensor camera. It illustrates a simple but complete solution towards the development of straightforward 3D motion controlled applications for different public environments.”

Find out more about the hardware and possibilities from our partners Fotonic.

See what Frog Design did with the technology at SXSW 2010.

Object tracking with Iphone

During the spring of 2010 we had a student, Lars Alin from the department of Computing Science at Umeå University doing his master thesis.

This thesis examines how object tracking can be implemented in applications for Iphone as well as providing a survey of four different areas of use that have been implemented in Xcode: an augmented reality car game, a letter tracking application, a face recognition application and an object recognition application.

Now the master thesis is printed and can be downloaded here for your interest: object tracking with iphone

Happy to say that Lars is no longer a student but part of our team nowadays, and he has been leading the technical development of our Ipad project for Credit Suisse.
