In collaboration with Kotex and Ogilvy, North Kingdom developed Period Planet: A browser game-based learning experience focused on educating 10-14 year olds on puberty and menstruation.
Empowering Period Education
Conversations about puberty and menstruation can be seen as a daunting and stigmatised subject. Kotex had a mission to educate girls around period health to communicate menstruating is a natural part of life that should be discussed openly, not hidden. Ogilvy then conceptualised Period Planet - an educational game to educate 10-14 year olds about menstruation. North Kingdom translated this vision and curriculum into the game browser experience - accessible in and outside the classroom.

North Kingdom designed and developed the experience for this initiative where the Kotex curriculum is explored through different game levels, unique gameplay mechanics, and adventures through new environments on the planet. Our game covers: Puberty and Signs of Getting a Period, How the Uterus Functions, Phases of the Menstrual Cycle, and Period Products & Period Preparedness.
We created Period Planet in WebGL for a low barrier of entry to children for a wide bandwidth of devices and internet connections. The beta was tested with teachers and students in Australia with an incredible 92% saying they will use it in their teaching curriculum.
Land of Mirrors
Land of Mirrors is a dark, magical twisting path of mirrors; each mirror poses a new question with truths and myths about the effects of puberty and first period indicators that must be answered correctly to proceed.
Crystal Cave
Crystal Cave focuses on the functions of the uterus. This point and click puzzle requires players to find crystals revealing educational content to unlock questions to progress forward and ignite the cave with glowing light.
Desert of the Moons
In Desert of the Moons, 28 moons hover in the sky, representing each day of the menstrual cycle. In this 2D platformer, users jump across the moonscape and collect stars which provide information about the menstrual cycle phase.
The Rainforest
The Rainforest, an endless runner, hosts a winding path of tokens representing period products and self care items among blossoming plant life. Players collect as many items as possible to reveal information about the respective product.
Users can select between 4 avatars to play through Period Planet - choosing color schemes and earning accessories across levels to create a customized portrait at the end of the experience.
Our world has supporting characters like our Guide, a teacher who dictates the curriculum throughout the game. In opposition, Myth Monsters represent stigma and misinformation which must be debunked by the user - transforming ignorance into knowledge.
